Wildfires in Oklahoma, Kansas scorch structures, prompt evacuations April 6, 2016Burnt terrain is seen in an aerial view of the Anderson Creek wildfire in southern Kansas, March 25, 2016. REUTERS/Kansas National Guard via social media/Sgt. Zachary Sheely/Handout via Reuters(Reuters) – Wildfires in Oklahoma and Kansas this week have burned thousands of acres, scorched numerous structures and prompted hundreds of people to evacuate their homes, officials said on Wednesday. The largest fire was the „350 Complex” fire, about 130 miles (210 km) northwest of Oklahoma City, that has hit an area of about 55,000 acres (22,250 hectares) and is mostly uncontained, Oklahoma Forestry Services said. The fire has burned numerous structures. The state has deployed about 115 personnel and several firefighting aircraft to extinguish the blaze, the service said, adding that other areas of the state were also at risk.”As fire weather conditions deteriorate, with dry and extremely gusty winds, new fires have started in multiple counties across Oklahoma,” it said. There have been multiple wildfires in Kansas, which borders Oklahoma to the north, with the largest in Geary County, about 60 miles (100 km) west of Topeka.A fire that burned about 500 acres (200 hectares) in Riley County, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Geary, has been contained, the Kansas Forest Service said.No major injuries have been reported in either state.(Reporting by Jon Herskovitz in Austin, Texas; Additional reporting by Heide Brandes; Editing by Jonathan Oatis and James Dalgleish)
Strong quake strikes Vanuatu; no injuries or tsunami threat April 7, 2016 WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Another strong earthquake struck the Pacific nation of Vanuatu on Thursday but there was no tsunami threat and no immediate reports of any damage or injuries. The magnitude-6.9 quake was the third strong earthquake to strike Vanuatu since Sunday, although none have caused problems. The quake hit 109 kilometers (68 miles) west of the village of Sola and 453 kilometers (281 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Vila, according the U.S. Geological Survey. Its depth was 32 kilometers (20 miles).Shadrack Welegtabit, the director of Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office, said he didn’t feel the quake in the capital and hasn’t received any reports that it has affected the island nation. He said he’s not sure what has triggered the recent spate of earthquakes. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a destructive tsunami.Vanuatu sits on the Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common. The nation is also prone to volcanoes and cyclones.

Reuters By Barbara Liston ORLANDO, Fla. (Reuters) – A 780-pound „monster” alligator slain in a Florida hunt and hauled out of the water with a farm tractor falls short of the state record for length, a wildlife official said on Wednesday.”A big alligator nonetheless, but they are not going to have an official measurement because it’s not going to beat the record,” Tony Young, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said in a phone interview. The longest alligator caught in the wild in Florida was measured at 14 feet 3-1/2 inches, he said. The state record for the heaviest gator taken from the wild is 1,043 pounds, according to the commission’s records. The animal killed on Saturday in a hunt at Outwest Farms in Okeechobee near the Florida Everglades was estimated by farm officials to be about 15 feet long, local media reported.Outwest Farms charges $550 to $10,000 for hunting alligators up to 13 feet and longer, according to its website.Farm officials believe the alligator was attacking cattle, local media reported. The gator was discovered in a pond where cattle came to drink, hunting guide Blake Godwin told local news station Fox 13. The hunters used a farm machine to pull it from the water after shooting it, he added.Outwest Farms posted a photo of what was described as a „monster” capture on Facebook, where a photo of the large animal dangling in the air from the farm equipment prompted mixed feelings. The post later appeared to have been taken down.”This is making me physically ill,” one person said in a post.Another poster defended the kill: „For anyone that is talking about relocating this beast … Why not y’all mess with a 15-foot, 800-pound gator? That gator could easily take your life like he was that cattle.”(Reporting by Barbara Liston; Writing by Colleen Jenkins; Editing by Richard Chang)
Mountain lion, mama bear feast in dramatic images near Los Angeles April 6, 2016A mountain lion known as P-35 is shown with a kill which is later consumed by a black bear and its cub in the Santa Susana Mountains in Southern California in this combination of handout photos taken between December 4-7, 2015 and released to Reuters April 6, 2016. REUTERS/Jeff Sikich/National Parks Service/Handout(Reuters) – Close-range photos of one of the mountain lions in a group being tracked by biologists in Southern California show her feasting on a deer kill in the Santa Susana Mountains just north of Los Angeles. The mountain lion, identified as P-35, can be seen staring into a motion-activated camera as she tucks into the deer carcass. She licks her nose after rising from the kill, and after she moves on a bear and cub move in to eat the remains.Biologists are studying mountain lions in Southern California in part to understand how encroachment of urban areas on their natural habitat affects the large cats. They installed the camera to see if P-35’s kitten, born last summer, was in tow. It was not seen in photos, National Park Service spokesman Zach Behrens said.”That kitten most likely did not make it,” he said. The pictures, released last month, were taken in the Santa Susana Mountains roughly 30 miles (48 kms) northwest of the Los Angeles Zoo, where another lion in the group, P-22, is suspected of mauling to death a 14-year-old koala.P-22 gained fame after being photographed striding past the landmark Hollywood sign, and touched off a media frenzy last year after he was discovered hiding in the crawl space under a Los Angeles house. He stole away in the dead of night.(Reporting by Eric M. Johnson in Seattle; Editing by Toni Reinhold)
42 Tombs and a Shrine Discovered in Egypt Stephanie Pappas April 6, 2016 The interior of a two-roomed tomb (Tomb 14), one of three cleared of silt at Gebel el Silsila in Upper Egypt.Forty-two rock-cut tombs and a shrine decorated with a winged sun disc have been found along the banks of the Nile River in Egypt. The discovery of this necropolis, the burial ground of men, women and children, proves that Gebel el-Silsila in Upper Egypt was not just a quarry site for the kingdom’s temples and tombs; it was also a bustling population center, according to the archaeological team that discovered the structures.”This is actually a major hub of commerce, worship and possibly political [activity],” said John Ward, assistant director of the Gebel el Silsila Survey Project.A big mystery surrounds the new tombs, however. Where is the lost city of Silsila? So far, archaeologists have discovered tombs, the quarry, a temple and slab monuments called stelae. But they haven’t found a town or village where the people who used these structures would have lived. [See photos of the new tomb discoveries in Upper Egypt]Flooded graves Silsila was originally believed to be a sort of work camp, where the predominant activity was quarrying for sandstone. Survey project mission director Maria Nilsson, Ward and their colleagues have been discovering much more than that at the site, however. Earlier this year, for example, they announced the discovery of six statues dating back 3,500 years that depicted elite families.Yesterday (March 30), Ward, Nilsson and the Ancient Egyptian Antiquities Sector announced the spring archaeological season discovery of the new tombs. They date back to the 18th and 19th dynasty, a period of time that runs from about 1543 B.C. to about 1189 B.C., which includes famous pharaohs like Hapshetsut.Archaeologists had known that rock-cut openings were present on the site’s Nile bluffs, Ward told Live Science. But the river has been eating away at the sandstone exteriors, damaging the structures. The group of archaeologists launched a project to clean out three of the openings, both to find out what was inside them and to see if they could slow down the erosion. They found that the tombs were filled with Nile silt, indicating that they’d been flooding before the first dams in the river were constructed in the 1800s. This silt was acting as a „sponge” to draw in river water, worsening the erosional damage, Ward said.”Once we started to clear this Nile silt, we could see that the actual sandstone surface itself was starting to dry out,” he said.”Tomb” 1, which was already clear of silt, turned out not to be a tomb, but a two-room shrine. While the outer room overlooks the Nile to the west, the inner room, which once had a slightly elevated floor, is damaged by water, Ward said. Despite the water damage, a carved stone solar disc with wings — a symbol of power and protection — is still visible, he said.Tomb 2 is an actual tomb, with stairs leading down into a rough-cut chamber without paintwork or any interior design. The space is so small that workers have to kneel to fit inside rather than stand up, Ward said. Many human bones were found in a jumble inside, which was probably caused by the Nile waters, he said. The tombs were also looted at some time in antiquity. Still, they contained many pieces of pottery such as beer jugs, offering plates, and bowls and storage jars — all funerary wares that were used in ancient Egyptian tombs, Ward said. [Photos: Nile Cemetery Discovered in Sudan]People of status The other two tombs that have been cleaned out, Tombs 14 and 15, were also looted, but both contained crypts carved into the floor. The crypt in Tomb 15 even retains half its lid, Ward said. The excavation also turned up „lots and lots of beads,” Ward said. And most intriguingly, the archaeologists found a scarab amulet bearing the name of the 18th-dynasty Pharaoh Thutmose III and a seal right along with his cartouche (an oval symbol surrounding a royal name), reinforcing the theory that Silsila was more than just a work camp for quarry diggers. These artifacts suggest that the people buried in the tombs were of higher standing than quarry workers, Ward said. Each of the documented tombs has a door with notches carved in the door jambs that could have held a stone portcullis, which could have been raised or lowered for new burials.”These are family tombs,” Ward said. The portcullis closures would have kept out floodwaters and wildlife, though maybe not permanently. In Tomb 14, the archaeologists found crocodile scutes — the triangular, bumpy protrusions seen on crocs’ backs. It’s not certain whether a crocodile made it into the tomb, Ward said, or whether the scutes flowed in with the Nile floodwaters. The team members plan to excavate more tombs in the next field season, and hope to find remains or names of the tomb occupants. They’re also continuing the survey in hopes of solving the biggest mystery surrounding Silsila: Where was the town, or village, that this necropolis served?”We’re pretty excited, to say the least,” Ward said. „It’s kind of nice to be able to say, ‘Silsila, we’ve got a necropolis now.'”
Area 51: Aliens and Government Coverup Conspiracy Theories Philip Lewis April 6, 2016 Area 51, a U.S. governmental site located in Nevada, has inspired some grand theories regarding extraterrestrial life and UFOs for decades. And recently, the head administrator of the NASA confirmed the facility exists. „There is an Area 51. It’s not what many people think. I’ve been to a place called that but it’s a normal research and development place,” Charles Bolden, who has led NASA since 2009, said, according to the Telegraph. „I never saw any aliens or alien spacecraft or anything when I was there. I think because of the secrecy of the aeronautics research that goes on there it’s ripe for people to talk about aliens being there.”Read more: Why 7 Experts Are Convinced Alien Life Might Really ExistSo, the head of NASA said that there is nothing strange about Area 51. Seems like an open and shut case. However, the former astronaut very clearly said that he „never saw any aliens or alien space craft.” It would appear that he could simply not be privy to the inner workings of Area 51. A former employee released „secret” Area 51 information. In 2014, a former scientist who claims to have worked within Area 51 named Boyd Bushman gave an interview with engineer Mark Patterson, just before he died. In the now-deleted video, Bushman claimed that he specialized in „reverse-engineering alien UFO technology for the military,” according to Tech Times. He also described the secret military base as hosting aliens, who come from the planet „Quintumnia.” „There are two groups of aliens. They divide them into two groups,” the deceased scientist said in the interview, according to the NY Daily News. „One group are wranglers, and the others are rustlers – the ones who are stealers of cattle. The two groups act differently. The ones that are wranglers are much more friendly, and have a better relationship with us.” While it is impossible for anyone to question Bushman now, there are claims the researcher’s interview was all a hoax. A host of conspiracy theories: Even 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton wants to get to the bottom of the Area 51 mystery. Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta has a strong interest in alien conspiracy theories, the Huffington Post reported. So much of an interest, in fact, that he spoke to Clinton about it. „He has made me personally pledge we are going to get the information out,” Clinton said, according to the Conway Daily Sun. „One way or another. Maybe we could have, like, a task force to go to Area 51.” Podesta probably hopes to uncover the conspiracy theories that have surrounded the facility; one of the most popular being that Area 51 hides the remains of UFOs that crash-landed to Earth. Area 51 conspiracy theorists believe that scientists and researchers are recruited to the secret military base in order to reverse-engineer the extraterrestrial technology, and that the government is covering it all up. Other theories include fancier possibilities, like the creation of weather control technology, time travel and teleportation. In 2013, the CIA confirmed the existence of Area 51, but made no mention about any grand conspiracy theories regarding aliens or UFOs, according to CNN. The released document instead confirmed that the secret military base is „a testing site for the government’s U-2 and OXCART aerial surveillance programs.” Regardless, the idea that alien life exists beyond the stars is one that isn’t going away any time soon.
